A Nightmare is a Wish Your Shadow Makes… When You’re Fast Asleep… [Dark Fairytales]

giphy (16)

As we roll into the more hopefully colder half of August, the dark and horror gamer part of myself starts to peek out from the shadows. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about dark fairytales, creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on both VN and Cozy Nook aspects of Gray’s Otome & VN Corner.

Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. Before we proceeded, I’d like to say thanks to Kelly from Another Book in the Wall Blog for making these Halloween themed prompts!

Reader beware, these visual novels aren’t for those who want romance flair, these are for those who dare to face their darkest nightmares.

Once upon a time, in a faraway land there lived a child who built her room with books and games. Choosing to make friends with fiction and battle dragons in the safety of the pages of paper, she lived thousands of lives with every story she consumed. Until one day… The world asked her to grow up and forget about pixie dust and the wishes her heart made when she was fast asleep. Departing from childhood innocence, she experienced the dark side of the tales from the nonfictional realms of reality and adulthood.

Tucking away her heart in the flurry of medical notes, failed romances, and bills; the child, now an adult, had forgotten the deepest wishes of her heart… Even as time passed and she soon gave up on her dreams, the dream did not give up on her.

One day, she woke up from the dark spell that society had conformed her to fit into, and realized that the fairy tale that was created to keep her locked away in the tower, was now crumbling. The spell broken at last, the child brought down the walls that had been created by years of being told who she had to be, not what she wanted to be. She’s fighting an ongoing battle, but refuses to lose faith–As someone once told her before it was time to go “Into the Unknown” and find the truth of her fate. It was time for her to be brave, and show herself.

Wooo, now that that is out of the way, this blog topic is going to focus on re-tellings of fairy tales from both games to books. These are just my honest recommendations from my past reading experience, however, I’m always open to more recommendations from everyone! Get ready to face the dragons and ice ogres that guard the castle, and break out of the tower to touch the sky.

Ozmafia isn’t truly a dark retelling of our favorite fairytales but it is a very interesting spin of our favorite fables and stories. Casting a web of story-rich endeavors with certain characters from the Wizard of Oz and even the mysterious Dorian Gray. This otome game is filled with different endings and you are the one who designs the endings for the heroine and her HEA.

This retelling actually took me by surprise when I first bought the game, I didn’t even know it was about fairytales until I played the game. It did take me for a loop, and the game currently sits on my shelf for another replay as it’s been a bit and I need to remember most of the stories endings LMAO.

Red Blood of Deep Wood

Tiana (a.k.a. Red Riding Hood) is the heroine of this game. She has a step-mother (I think she’s very nice to her in the beginning because of her way of speaking towards her, but, it can’t be decided just yet). Her step-mother told her to go to a wood, for finding his brother (which means, he’s Tiana’s uncle). So far she goes deep into the wood, then she just realizes she’s being tricked by her mother. It turns out, her step-mother just wants to finish her off in the woods. Tiana just laughing at that, then surrenders herself to what will happen in the future. (Twentyninenights Blog)

This game is not available in English, but you can find fan translations and also game guides and such online on how to get the game and play it. This is another dark retelling but for adults, meaning there are vivid sex scenes and illustrations on what is going on between the characters. There are also fairly questionable elements in this game so readers’ discretion is advised as there are a few psychos… Depending on the ending you get.

The Cinderella Phenomenon is a game I had put off playing for a long time until recently, this is a free game on both Steam and Itch.io, but I do advise to please tip the creators as this game is extremely well made and the narrative is entrancing. The heroine is not a normal MC where she’s cutesy or headstrong, no, this woman is the ice queen. You follow her journey through the kingdom as she falls into the curse of the ‘Cinderella Phenomenon,’ losing everything she held dear to her.

The fairy tale takes a daringly different take on the stories we know including the ‘helpless’ princess skit. I highly recommend this game if you’re interested in seeing a different MC who is cold and is a himedere.

(JAST USA|Steam)

A once upon a time predicament with your own choice on how you want the story to end, TAISHO x ALICE is another otome spin on classic fairytales. You follow the MC of this world as she tries to figure out just who she is and how she ended up in this ‘topsy-turvy’ world that houses male versions of classical female protagonists from fairytales we know. With chapter two of this game coming out in October of this year, this game is certainly something to not dismiss as the game art and soundtrack are lovely; and voice acting is implemented (which is a plus!).

Ah… The book that is loosely based on The Goblin King, while the story takes some of the fairytale’s lore into its pages, it is far from the original beloved tales that we know as children. When I got this book into my hands, I was influenced by my best friend to read it and garner an opinion about it so we could have a chat over tea on our thoughts for it. The writing style and syntax of the story is a seductively entrancing and borders on adult romance erotica.

From what I understood after reading the book and also researching the original concept, the novel was supposed to be for adults but somehow got reformatted into a YA novel instead. Just like the Throne of Glass series, the book touches on sensual elements and very adult situations that I won’t mention here. Read the book and you’ll find out what I mean, but otherwise, this dark retelling is a masterpiece of seduction and bittersweet angst.

A dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Rosamund Hodge truly captivated me with her novels about these young women and facing off against these ‘monsters’ of men. In cruel beauty, we meet a young girl who is on a mission to destroy the ‘beast’ but the trials and tribulations she faces are anything but easy or kind. She meets a young man in the castle of the beast and together, it seems a mystery of sorts unfolds, intertwining both destiny and prophecy together into an illustrious fairy tale of fascinating proportions.

I wanted to add this book as well because the story was just as captivating as Cruel Beauty, with the haunting narrative and luminous portrayal of words used by the author. I can’t help but be enchanted by this story as well, as it takes the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood to new heights and dangers. Rosamund has a gift with creating alluring imagery and provocative dialogue within her novels, and this next installment of her series did not fail its predecessor.

Katherine Arden’s book was a curveball for me, as I was introduced to this spellbinding book through a random Tumblr. The book’s title captured my interest along with the simplistic look of the cover, this dark fairy tale contains elements from Russian lore. It’s a masquerade of lush imagery, captivating words, and dance of wintery magic that is truly unremarkable. The main heroine is relatable and above all else, not a damsel in distress, and she can rescue herself.

This isn’t a jeepers creepers blog post, but it sure does touch on darker aspects of the blog’s character. Introducing more content and pushing open new pathways for new ideas and content to flow freely into the blogosphere and fandoms this blog happens to dip into. As we wrap up this almost dark fairytale-filled blog post of sorts from both the Cozy Nook and the Gaming Corner of my blog… These are just my own opinions, but I know there will more to come of these kinds of articles in my corner of the blogosphere.
