As we roll into August, the horror gamer part of myself starts to peek out from the shadows a little more. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on the VN aspect of this gaming genre.
Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. I’m pretty biased about certain supernatural creatures in books, games, and other media. Meaning, if I see them in a title or in the summary of a game, I’ll immediately be drawn to either read, watch, or play the item as soon as I can get it in my grasps. In today’s blog I;m going to be talking about the top three supernatural creatures I love in multimedia and some recommendations to boot. However, I’m always open to new recommendations, so if you have a piece of media that liked or loved with the supernatural creatures I talk about in here. Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies, and Witches–OH MY~!
[VAMPIRES]
Thanks to the wonderful stories of R.L. Stine, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Christopher Pike, and Bram Stoker. Vampires have become a staple of favorite literary creatures of the night that reside in my bookshelf today. Depending on how someone spins the tale, we either have a fantasy woven world of blood and gore with a hint of tragedy. Among others, we get a romanticized trance of carnal blood lust and temptation from these seductive creatures.
However, while some of these creatures pose as sinfully beautiful creatures, they lure you into a state of debauchery and then kill you for your blood. Whether they choose to turn you into one of them or just make you food for the night, this iconic entity still remains strong in the literary world as a vicious and salacious creature of darkness.

I want to say this book series is a cult classic, and out of all the books the lovely Anne Rice has crafted. Queen of the Damned reigns supreme in my novels of vampires and blood lust, carnage, and provocative sin. While I did like the movie, it didn’t really capture the horror that was Akasha and her innate ravenous need to disrupt the balance of the world. The world of vampires that Rice has created is dark, seductive, and the syntax is more than just sexually alluring for a sapiosexual.
I adored this book and the characters that have imprinted themselves as household names in the paranormal literary universe.

This is a recent game I have been playing, but the provocative and sensual universe that Cybird has created with figures from history as vampires? Hell, I was smitten, love at first bite, if you will. With a wide cast of scholars, artists, musicians, and even the renown Shakespeare appearing as a romanceable LI in the game. The hedonistic world of vampires never looked so good, but the horror remains as the heroine is twisted into this lust-filled world. Romance may be the driving force in the game, but the characters all have a solid background, no head-hopping, and the MC is not a pushover.
If you’re looking to get a little bit of fictional history and the added bloodshed that vampires are known for, look no further than this game.
[WEREWOLVES]
HOOOOWWWWLLLL~ As Werewolves come running in right after the presentation of Vampires, and I’m talking actual werewolves not the Animagus versions that we’ve seen as of late. These voracious and carnivorous creatures of the moon are humans who are bitten or born into the heritage of this carnage, unable to control their body and mind when the moon is high in the sky. They forfeit all of their human emotions and transform under the moon’s grace and become diabolical killing machines.
While in recent times stories revolving around the werewolf lore has changed to suit the tastes of the modern society. Werewolves remain as one of my top supernatural creatures of the night, with their ability to either be purely evil incarnate or martyr at the end of a story… The werewolf comes out on this list as a truly horrific contender to most supernatural literacy out there.

I was a rebel in my childhood, and when I went strolling around the adult horror section, I saw this book titled ‘Cycle of the Werewolf’ by Stephen King. I was still a kid then, and I hadn’t realized who Stephen King was and that he was also the creator of ‘IT.’ I had run out of books to read from R.L. Stine at the local library and happened upon this, considering I didn’t think how much this book would change my perspective on werewolves. Ooooh boy… This is the book that turned into the movie known as ‘Silver Bullet,’ and this book to this day still gives me chills, ahaha!

Arithmetic Games is either a hit or miss for me, but I’m going to give them props for this game as it’s like junk food and all other bad stuff you shouldn’t be putting into your mind or body, HAH! This game does have a bite and the heat level of romance is fairly decent, and while the werewolves in here aren’t the ones I usually identify as an Animagus versus a regular werewolf. The game has it’s decent points, with beautiful artwork, and talented VAs to bring the characters to life. The game is fairly a good binge to have on the phone, but just a bit of caution, this is a ‘freemium’ game, so you won’t be able to read the whole story in a sitting unless you want to put out some money for it.
[ZOMBIES]
Wouldn’t be a monster mash if I didn’t talk about zombies being a supernatural creature in fiction, because we can’t have a party without them. Mindless creatures that are only driven to eat human flesh or anything that moves, this rotting corpse of a monster will continue it’s carnivorous rampage until either beheaded or shot through the head. What makes this supernatural creature terrifying is the virus that flows in its bodily fluids, and just getting even a smidge of it into your system makes you the next Zombie soldier in their army. One of the very sinister creations in the paranormal writing universe, this undead entity is not just terror incarnate for some people, it’s an annoying fuck of a neighbor who won’t die until you knock it’s head off… literally.

Based on the one of the best running apps for android and iOS, Zombies, Run! The Way of the Flesh is a diabolically sinister and engrossing audiobook for fans of the app. The story follows different narratives and it’s a full-fledged cast of different personalities and interests. You follow several survivors trying to escape the hordes, but a murder amongst the group causes tensions to flair and doubts to sky-rocket. Who can you trust when you have a murderer within the group and a carnivorous army of zombies outside the door?

Didn’t think there was an otome game full of zombies? There is. This is a freemium game, so be advised, it’s ticketed and you’ve gotta have patience unless you have money to spend to get to the endings. Dangerous Fellows is a horror otome game where you must survive with a cast of unlikely heroes and villains to survive the zombie apocalypse. A wicked good time, you need to pick and choose your weapons, outfits, and rally up your strength with the craziness that is about to ensue in the game. FYI, be wary of the lover you choose… Some have your interests at heart, and others… well… are after your heart and the death of everyone else.
[WITCHES]
While witches shouldn’t be a supernatural creature, because we walk among everyone and not all of us have crooked noses and eat children as depicted by certain novels. I do love a good story about witches and the craft itself, especially when they are well written and the world is very much something you can drown yourself in from the allure of words on the pages of a novel or game. Since the movie, ‘The Craft’ a cult classic and favorite, witchcraft and the history of witches have been an ongoing study for me. Reading stories based on both fiction and non-fiction are both enlightening and always full of new discoveries. Also, you can’t have a complete supernatural party extravaganza without them conjuring the drinks and striking up some philosophical chats about astronomy and botany.

I adore this book and the way that the practitioners of the craft are written, the approach to the craft is more realistic without the flashing of pixie dust and conjuring of pyro-kinetics that movies seem to portray that we have power over. The novel follows Ophelia, a woman who refuses to acknowledge her gifts and tries to abstain from looking any further into it. Her grandmother, Abby, a wise woman, and witch, tries her best to encourage Ophelia to see her powers as gifts rather than a nuisance. When a murder hits close to home, Ophelia finds herself becoming tangled in a mystery that needs to be solved with both wit and a little bit of magick.

Although the book and the movie have some differences, the story is still captivating and beautifully written and directed. I actually had watched the movie first, as I had no idea there was even a book that had been published that this movie was based on. I still remember when this movie came out everyone wanted to be Sandra Bullock or Nicole Kidman, not only that, “MIDNIGHT MARGARITAS” became a thing LMAO. I adored the movie and the trials that Sam endured, but also the comedic problems that occurred between the sisters.
When I got my hands on the book, I was elated to relive the story all over again but from the original perspective of the author. It didn’t disappoint, the universe was magical and Hoffman’s casual way of weaving an enchanting story not only tingled my mind but also my senses. Both the book and the movie are a must.

Before the Shall We Date? Armageddon occurred, NTT Solmare created this darling gem of a game that had its own standalone app in both iOS and Android stores. The story follows the descendant of a witch who gets trapped in a house filled with all supernatural creatures galore. From Vampires, Werewolves, a Were-Cat, and more, the story is provocative and enchanting with the mixed pleasures of romance and angst. While Blood In Roses has been transferred into a new library app from NTT Solmare, the game has officially finished updating as of this year and from my understanding… It may be the next game that may vanish next year… (let’s hope not, since this game is one of the many good games this company did create).

Supernatural creatures are by far both a literary staple and also in the multimedia realms, the allure of something that is beyond the principles of science captivates us and further drives us to obtain knowledge or trinkets for these entities. Whether it is a flesh-eating zombie from the iconic Resident Evil series to the witchy spell casting of the women from AHS: The Coven. Werewolves, Vampires, and Witches–OH MY!! They’re here to stay and guide us through the paranormal realms, hooray~!
