You’re Not So Scary, Even with Your Red Eyes and Sharp Teeth [Villains I Don’t Fear]

giphy (13)

It’s getting colder here where I’m from, and that means… the horror gamer part of myself is peeking out from the shadows a little more. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on the VN aspect of this gaming genre.

Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. Before we proceeded, I’d like to say thanks to Kelly from Another Book in the Wall Blog for making these Halloween themed prompts!

Note: I thank you for sticking with me as I start incorporating the last core fandoms into this blogging corner for the enjoyment of myself and other multiplayer gamers/book readers/ geeks/outcasts/or the fandom rebels.

Reader beware, these visual novels aren’t for those who want romance flair, these are for those who dare to face their darkest nightmares.

Ever watch a movie that you got hyper up for because it looked like it could wreck your world in a blink of an eye only to be let down by poorly done jump scares, too much CGI graphics, or perhaps there’s a great story but the main monster wasn’t exactly giving you the creeps? Welcome to that blog that spills the tea on certain creatures and villains that didn’t quite terrify the author of this blogging domain. While it’s been mentioned here and there in this area of the blogosphere that I love horror and mystery fiction, I have yet a chance to start bringing it to light, here in the blog… until now.

So with today’s topic adapted from “Another Book in the Wall’s October Blog Prompts,” I’m going to be talking about creatures that should have scared me, but didn’t. So settle in, grab a cup of tea and your favorite Chucky doll (no don’t grab the doll, it’s a joke–and I would probably set your doll on fire…), and let’s scroll through the blog about these villains of horror and fiction.

.。*゚+.*.。 CLOVERFIELD: THE MONSTER ゚+..。*゚+

I’m an avid fan of “creature feature” movies, and when Cloverfield came onto the scene, I was more than ready to throw my money at it. However, there were some problems I had with the movie and the monster itself. The visual was recorded on one of those tiny handheld cameras we used to have back in the old days and the shots of the film would go back and forth between the past and the present, due to the film being filmed over another video.

Cloverfield wasn’t as scary as anticipated by the monster itself, rather it was scary from the blurry lens of the cameraman, as you could see things bursting out from people or attacking them. When we finally got a good look at the villainous foe, I wasn’t impressed nor was it enough to actually incite fear into me. I felt he looked like a rip off from another horror movie I’d seen called: FEAST.

FYI: “Feast” is a horror comedy with some raunchy-ass craziness going on in there. IMO it gave the similar vibes of “The Evil Dead” and I absolutely loved the comical and gorey splash fest that unraveled in the movie. If you aren’t into unnecessary blood splatter and gore, this movie probably isn’t one to watch, however, the monster in this movie also didn’t scare me. To be honest, it actually made me roll my eyes at how perverse it was even with all the ripping and shredding it did.

.。*゚+.*.。 HALLOWEEN: MICHAEL MYERS ゚+..。*゚+

I do love me some slasher flicks but Michael Myers was not scary, and albeit I understood the whole mask concept for him. Also, the psychiatry tried to implement his reasons to wear a mask over his face but in all honesty. I felt he could have done away without the mask and inflict psychologic horror on me by just showing his real face. The close-ups that they would do to his face made me tilt my head in confusion rather than fear.

I’d probably be one of the weird teenagers looking at him as a deranged psychopath and be ready to brawl it out with lighting him on fire and shooting him. I do give props for the jump scares he did manage to pull off on the characters, but other than that, it was a hard fail.

.。*゚+.*.。 ARKHAM ASYLUM: KILLER CROC & BANE ゚+..。*゚+

Not many people may know this but I love the Arkham Series for Batman, and I salute Arkham Asylum for giving me all the horror induced glee and action I wanted in a game for Batman himself. However, I was told that the scariest boss that people had faced off with was Bane and Killer Croc… I begged to differ. While they both go through a mutation of sorts that changes their physical appearance–they’re not terrifying.

I’d say the most terrifying thing I witnessed in the game was going against Scare Crow, but Killer Croc reminded me of trying to take down a Predator rather than an insane cannibalistic half-human reptilian. Bane’s entrance was not remotely terrifying but it did look gross when his biceps bulged to the point that it was about to burst and probably saturate the screen.

.。*゚+.*.。 RESIDENT EVIL: ZOMBIES ゚+..。*゚+

Zombies are the least scariest scoundrels I’ve encountered in any game, whether it is Resident Evil to Left 4 Dead, or Dead Island. They are the least likely to terrify me, and the game mostly gets off at just scaring the gamer by executing well-crafted jump scare tactics into the scenes. When I was a child these characters would scare me and I would jump at every camera angle that showcased them. However, as I got older my viewpoint changed and I found myself being more numb and cold at their appearance and preparing to shoot when necessary to get them out of my way.

Even in movies that did come out about them, my thought process was still the same. The real horrifying culprits in any apocalypse story isn’t the monsters… It’s humans.

.。*゚+.*.。 RESIDENT EVIL: NEMESIS ゚+..。*゚+

Nemesis. No, he wasn’t the scariest villain in the game I’d ever seen in RE3, but he was one hell of a boss to beat the shit out of. While the new RE3 gave him a makeover and more visually scary appeal, he didn’t strike me as someone who could invoke the wrath of fear into me. What he did manage to provoke out of me was to find a bigger gun to blast his stupid face to outer space and beyond.

Resident Evil is still one of my favorite series to play from time to time when I need that jolt of action and a mix of horror to assuage that spooky craving. While some of the more prevalently known icons of the series aren’t as terrifying as they are tough to beat. It goes without saying that Nemesis still gathers a huge following with the ugly mug of his LMAO.

.。*゚+.*.。 SHARKTOPUS VS. WHALEWOLF ゚+..。*゚+

Yes, that’s the name of the movie, and I watched it for just shits and giggles but these guys aren’t scary. I think I laughed a little too hard with the movie, even when people got torn apart and became fishbait for these weirdass mutations. I’m not sure who comes up with these weird fishy/animal hybrid concoctions but they know how to entertain a crowd that’s not looking for anything seriously terrifying for the night. I think these creatures weren’t created for fear in the first place except for some good old ‘trashy’ monster flicks that you know ain’t great but you binge it anyways.

Spooks, villains, and horror galore is starting to make an appearance on my blog and it isn’t even October yet. However, it’s never to early to start celebrating a little horror and Fangoria on that page, whether it’s from visual novels to survival games. Know that when it comes to games, it’s an open playing field even in this small corner of the gaming blogosphere. So what are the not-so-scary monsters under your bed that you didn’t find yourself jumping out of your skin for? Let me know in the comments below, and if you enjoyed this prompt and want to recreate one of your own… TAG ME SO I CAN READ TOO!!!

As always, thanks for stopping by, and see you on the gaming side~!
