As we roll into the more hopefully colder half of August, the horror gamer part of myself starts to peek out from the shadows a little more. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on the VN aspect of this gaming genre.
Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. Before we proceeded, I’d like to say thanks to Kelly from Another Book in the Wall Blog for making these Halloween themed prompts!
Now…
Reader beware, these visual novels aren’t for those who want romance flair, these are for those who dare to face their darkest nightmares.
If you aren’t a horror fan please check out my other blogs! Otherwise, if you like horror and a bit of creepy stuff.
CARRY ON~!

There are plenty of legends, ghost stories, and lore that I want adapted into novels, and games. However, I feel it takes an open mind and a very spookily creative heart to make such media with the understanding of where these stories come from. There are a few certain retellings of some of the stories I mention below, but it’s a hard area to get correct at times. Especially when content is heavily saturated with predictable plot and tropes sprinkled abundantly into the content, making the story less engrossing for the audience and more of an eyeroll extravaganza.
Although, I’m certain there is a majority of media I possibly have yet to discover that has really well done content that I have yet to see or play. Hopefully I’ll find more as I keep pilfering the blogosphere and dig through some graves to find what I’m looking for. Now that I’ve babbled a bit longer than usual, let’s get into the stories and legends I’d love to see more of in media and games alike! Don’t forget you flaishlights~!

.。*゚+.*.。 THE ONRYO ゚+..。*゚+
★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・
While I’ve seen movie adaptations of this type of ghost, I want to bring it out a little more, as this spirit is known throughout Asia. Depending on which country you go to, we all have different variations of this malevolent spirit, some call her ‘the woman in white’ and others… ‘the onryo.’ Widely seen as the villain in the movie known as The Grudge, the Onryo is a vengeful spirit that comes back to haunt the ones who wronged them in when they were alive.
For today, I’m going to be using the Japanese name variant, which is the Onryo, this is a type of ghost or ‘Yurei.’ This is a violent entity and seeks to do harm and also … claim justice… depending on how you see it. However, this ghost doesn’t stop after it has accomplished its task of torturing the ones who wronged them… No… Their anger and rage from their untimely demise spread like fire and infects anyone or anything that it can get its hands on. Yes, there are mangas and adaptations, but I would terrifyingly love an actual story that involves romance and horror together; with a good HEA or HFN ending for the characters.

.。*゚+.*.。 THE ZASHIKI-WARAI ゚+..。*゚+
★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・
The Zahiki-Warai are what we call ‘mischievous children’ who often stay in the home of a well-off family, bringing good luck to the home and also playing comical tricks to the inhabitants. While these entities are not scary and they are more harmless than terrifying, the one issue that occurs with these children leaving the home it inhabits usually ends up in the demise of good fortune for these people. So keep these children happy, and leave snacks for them in good faith–only the owner of the home can see them.
I would love to see a variant of a story about these spirits, while there is a few of them in mangas and anime, I would really like to see a novel written about them. Whether portrayed as a cute child or maybe a grown-up sexy man, it would be an interesting story to see.

★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・
Oof~ I Just got full-body chills, ever heard the line ‘curiosity killed the cat’? This is one of those stories, and it would create a very terrifying piece that’ll keep the masses up in the dark hours of the night. Contemplating if they should have ever read the story at all and if they have also incurred wrath that shouldn’t have been known of. A puzzle box, book, or a weird talisman itself seems harmless, right?

.。*゚+.*.。WEREWOLF/LYCANIAN/LOUP-GAROU+..。*゚+
★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・
I’m team werewolf, as these mythical creatures can either be represented as friend or foe. In Celtic lore, it was stated that werewolves were actually employed by royalty as soldiers for battle and that they weren’t the ravenous carnivores we see in movies. On the other hand, other tales spin the narrative of these creatures being attuned to only their carnal nature and feasting on anything in its path.
I believe a lot of romance stories make it so the werewolf is actually cognitive and can transform at will when I don’t think that’s probable. I want to see a story that the character is unable to control the transformation and their desires as the creature, but they remember exactly what they did. Also, I would love to see another variant go against the werewolf, a Lycanian type or something similar to an Animagus, that they can transform at will but to battle against the uncontrolled weres and other vicious forces of the night.

.。*゚+.*.。 HELLHOUND +..。*゚+
★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★★・・・・・・★・・・・・・★・・・・・
Finally… The Hellhound, while there was one particular story I found and read awhile back about this creature. There are not many stories to read or enjoy about the beast of hell, and Teen Wolf doesn’t really help the case either. Hellhounds are stated to be immortal and that nothing can kill this undead entity as it’s purpose is to drag to hell the souls that made a pact with the devil. Teen Wolf kind of made it weird for me and only Supernatural got it right with certain areas.
It would be awesome to see this demonic hound appear in more novels and perhaps maybe a better love story…

A book dragon can always fantasize about other stories that can be written, or hope to maybe pen the ideas on their own for the fun of it. These happen to be my top picks of legends and stories that I would like to see written in a fictional stance. Legends and Lore hold lessons for us to be taught, and while the craft of storytelling over a campfire may have dwindled. Books and audiobooks have remained to still capture these stories, but I do feel a new generation of storytelling these legends is a must.
However, this is just my opinion and I would love to know if there are books with these ideas out there for me to read. So readers, what fairytales, lore, and legends would you like to see become a novel? Let me know in the comments below!
