Tales from the Nook: This is Halloween~!

tumblr_oou07vnju21twznt5o1_500

As we roll through September, the dark and horror gamer part of myself starts to peek out from the shadows. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about dark fairytales, creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on both VN and Cozy Nook aspects of Gray’s Otome & VN Corner.

Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. Before we proceeded, I’d like to say thanks to Kelly from Another Book in the Wall Blog for making these Halloween themed prompts!

Now…

Reader beware, these visual novels aren’t for those who want romance flair, these are for those who dare to face their darkest nightmares.

“The days are getting a bit more colder, and the leaves are changing before the sun as fall begins to make its way into our lives.”

532150273_preview_John DanceIn today’s blog I’m going to cover the wonderful and lovely Halloween Theme, meaning the content in here will be books and other media that revolve around Halloween aesthetics! Most will be on books, but I do have a few games that I will add in here, including a few games I had found at random that carry the Halloween spirit. The days are getting a bit more colder, and the leaves are changing before the sun as fall begins to make its way into our lives.

“The season of change and cooler weather, sweaters, pumpkin treats, and flashy garments is an attractive event for me.”

giphy (1)

There’s just something about the autumn season that fills me with joy, rather than dread for the colder seasons of the year. I’ve always found the fall season to be my favorite, and it might also have to do with my birthday but that’s besides the point, LOL. The season of change and cooler weather, sweaters, pumpkin treats, and flashy garments is an attractive event for me. Thanksgiving and Christmas are a time for family gatherings and good will, but Halloween? It’s all about spooks and tricks, and also speaking to those who have departed from us.

So grab your broomsticks, and let’s fly off into the sky and look into Halloween Themed media!

The Legend of Sleepy Harlow takes us to the quaint island of South Bass where a team of interesting ladies live. I love Kylie Logan, and I’ve mentioned her previously in Tales of from the Nook on a prior blog post. However, this book is definitely my favorite thus far as it mentions the beloved tale of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and in the novel, the women have their own legend of ghosts on the island as well. The League of Literary Ladies are tossed into another murder when a ghost hunter is found dead on the island after having supposedly captured the local ghost, Sleepy Harlow, on camera.

“I love cozy mysteries for their light-hearted narratives and their distinct push in adding down to earth elements into their plots, including some puns too.”

This isn’t a scary novel, so you don’t need to be afraid to read it, but I do want to express to you that you will more than likely be laughing throughout the story, and trying to figure out who the culprit is. I love cozy mysteries for their light-hearted narratives and their distinct push in adding down to earth elements into their plots, including some puns too.

I know some people won’t categorize this as Halloween themed, but I do! Considering it’s a mansion with all the twist, turns, scares, and horrific evil child of the century type of game. I do want to state that you shouldn’t play this game if you are not comfortable with jump scares and things popping into your face. You’ve been warned. I got interested about this game due to a well-known Let’s Player, Markiplier, and his video of his jump scares.

“I do want to state that you shouldn’t play this game if you are not comfortable with jump scares and things popping into your face.”

It interested me, so I went and found it on Steam before they gave it a renovation do-over, giphy (3)however, it doesn’t change the significance that this game emulates the perfect haunted house. If you’re looking for some fun and a bit of a scare, take on Spooky’s challenge and try to defeat her labyrinth of jump scares and fear.

You are cordially invited to the Annual Valdemar Halloween Extravaganza. Two weeks of luxury await you.

Let’s see if you can keep up the masquerade…”

Halloween Otome is an otome visual novel in which the protagonist, Emma Cee (name changeable) wins an invite to a most exclusive and sought out Halloween getaway. What she doesn’t realise is that it’s far from relaxing. The Halloween getaway turns out to be a annual game hosted for the rich and famous and every contestant is thrown into miscellaneous groups, challenged over the course of ~ 2 weeks.

jfQSAgThis is a fairly new otome game that came into my collection, and I’m impressed with what the developer has done. Halloween Otome is part of a Holiday Otome series that is being created by Synokoria, this is a short otome game but it is engaging and isn’t something to be scared of.

“You’re invited to go on the ultimate Halloween getaway…”

You’re invited to go on the ultimate Halloween getaway, but the getaway isn’t all that you expect Ya5PPait to be. There are three romance-able LIs in the game, and about nine different endings. If you’re looking for a short otome game that has a good narrative, and exceptionally well drawn characters, you need this game in your otome armada collection then!

giphy (4)It’s Halloween Themed, right? For anyone who doesn’t know this movie serial killer, Michael Myers grew to fame in the 1980s when slasher films were a very big deal. Which also sported, Jamie Lee Curtis becoming crowned as one of the original ‘Scream Queens‘ back in the early days.

“I honestly fail at this game, but it’s fun to play with friends and scream when you’re caught LOL.”

Michael certainly is one hell of a killer in Dead by Daylight, and I remember when this commercialgiphy (5) dropped about him being added as a character. Fans of the franchise went nuts as they eagerly awaited the chapter release, and the chance to play as Michael or go against him. I honestly fail at this game, but it’s fun to play with friends and scream when you’re caught LOL.

I’m certain I’m going to get eye rolls on regards to this book and the fact it’s an old 80s horror novel. When I read this as a kid, I loved it, and I still do. I’m not gonna recommend this book for adult readers who want a more mature read and such, as the writing style was created for the teen audience of that generation. So there are a few things that you can agree with and other parts you can’t agree with, however, I’d like to mention if you just want a fast read with some moments of chuckling at some of familiar tropes, read this book and enjoy.

I preferred the second book to the first one, and while I can say go ahead and read the first, the second book had a very strange twist to it. Gotta read it to find out though!

“The story is fairly old, written in the early 1800s, this tale has been retold to children and also remade for adult tastes as well for all to enjoy.”

Of course, this has to be on the list, and I would definitely love to see Dead by Daylight recreate the Headless Horseman for their game as a villain to have. Anyhow though, Sleepy Hollow was read to me as a kid, but it was the Disney version, not the original one… I love learning about legends and lore that are woven into the tapestry of American history, and while I am not going to talk about too much history in here. The story is fairly old, written in the early 1800s, this tale has been retold to children and also remade for adult tastes as well for all to enjoy.

I know there are other similar stories of a headless horseman in other parts of the world, like the Dullahan, but this is one of my first loves of Halloween literature. I do recommend watching or reading about the story, and see if you find a variant that you like of it. As a side note, I also love the movie version of Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci!

Now that we’ve properly gotten off our broomsticks and made it to Hogsmeade for some good old butter beer and delicious treats from the local stores here. These are just a few of the many Halloween theme books and games out there, and they just happen to be the ones I hold a candle for. Halloween, oh Halloween, I cannot wait for thee~! Any how though, I am always open to suggestions for any media that is horror and thriller based, so drop any recommendations in the comments below!
